Five ways to calculate with percentages
- X% of a number: 15% of 80 is 0.15 × 80 = 12.
- What percentage is it? 30 out of 120 is 30 ÷ 120 × 100 = 25%.
- Percentage change: from 80 to 60 is (60 − 80) ÷ 80 × 100 = −25%, a decrease of 25%.
- Number plus X%: 200 plus 10% is 200 × 1.10 = 220.
- Number minus X% (discount): 49.95 with 20% off is 49.95 × 0.80 = 39.96.
Adding and removing the same percentage
Adding 10% and then taking 10% off doesn't bring you back to the start: 100 becomes 110 and then 99. The second 10% is taken from a bigger number. To find what an amount was before an increase, divide by the factor instead: 110 ÷ 1.10 = 100. For VAT, the VAT calculator does this for you.
Percent or percentage point?
If an interest rate goes from 2% to 3%, that is a rise of 1 percentage point, but of 50 percent (because 1 is half of 2). Choose Percentage change to work out the second one.
