How it works

  1. Select the text in Word, Google Docs, Outlook or your browser and copy it (Ctrl+C).
  2. Paste it into the left box (Ctrl+V). The formatting stays visible there.
  3. The Markdown appears on the right straight away. Choose the heading style and the bullet character yourself.
  4. Copy the Markdown or download it as an .md file.

What gets converted?

  • Headings become #, ## and so on.
  • Bold, italic and strikethrough become **bold**, *italic* and ~~strikethrough~~.
  • Bullet and numbered lists, also nested.
  • Links become [text](address).
  • Tables become Markdown tables with |.
  • Quotes and code blocks stay recognisable.

Fonts, colours and sizes don't exist in Markdown and are dropped. Scripts and hidden formatting from Word are removed before the text is converted, and the pasted content is never run.

Which formatting is converted?
