What is ROT13?
ROT13 replaces every letter with the letter 13 places further in the alphabet: A becomes N, B becomes O, and Z becomes M. Since the alphabet has 26 letters, doing it twice brings you back where you started, so encoding and decoding are the same operation. Hello world! becomes Uryyb jbeyq!.
Only the letters A–Z (upper and lower case) are changed; digits, punctuation, spaces and accented letters stay as they are.
What it is good for
ROT13 hides spoilers, puzzle answers and punchlines from a casual glance. It is not encryption: anyone can read it in seconds. For real secrecy, use text encryption. For other shifts, try the Caesar cipher.
