How long should a password be?
Length matters most. A password of 16 random characters with letters, digits and symbols has about 100 bits of entropy: not guessable even with every computer in the world. The tool shows how many bits you get for each setting.
- Under 60 bits: too weak for important accounts.
- 60 to 80 bits: strong.
- 80 bits or more: very strong, suitable for e-mail, banking and your password manager.
Every kind of character you tick appears at least once, so the password also satisfies sites that demand, say, a digit and a symbol.
Tips for safe passwords
- Use a different password for every site. If one leaks, your other accounts stay safe.
- Keep them in a password manager, so you don't have to remember them.
- Turn on two-step verification wherever you can.
- Choose Leave out look-alike characters if you have to type a password in or read it out.

Are the codes stored anywhere?
No. Everything is made in your browser with your device's cryptographic random number generator (crypto.getRandomValues). Nothing goes to a server and nobody else can see the result.
