What is a UUID?

A UUID (Universally Unique Identifier) is a 128-bit ID, written as 32 hexadecimal characters in five groups: 8-4-4-4-12, for example 3f2b8c1e-9d4a-4b7e-a1c2-5e6f7a8b9c0d. The chance of two random UUIDs being equal is so small that you can create them anywhere without a central counter, for example as a database key or a file name.

Version 4 or version 7?

  • Version 4 is completely random (122 random bits). The most widely used kind.
  • Version 7 starts with the time in milliseconds followed by random bits (RFC 9562). New IDs therefore land at the end of a database index, which is faster for big tables. The downside: anyone can see when the ID was made.

Both are made with crypto.getRandomValues in your browser. You can spot a version 4 UUID by the 4 at the start of the third group, and a version 7 by the 7.

Are the codes stored anywhere?

No. Everything is made in your browser with your device's cryptographic random number generator (crypto.getRandomValues). Nothing goes to a server and nobody else can see the result.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. The tool works in any modern browser on a phone, tablet or computer.
