Why spaces matter
Spaces, tabs and line breaks all count as characters when a limit says "characters including spaces". Typical limits: 280 for a post on X, 160 for a text message and about 155 to 160 for a search result description.
The counter also shows the number of characters without spaces, the size in bytes, the words, lines, sentences and paragraphs, and the reading time. Emoji and accented letters count once.
For the count without spaces as the main figure, use character count without spaces. The general character counter shows the same numbers.

Is the characters with spaces free?
Yes. The characters with spaces is completely free, with no account, sign-up or usage limit.
How are characters counted?
The way you see them: a letter with an accent or an emoji counts as one character. Spaces and line breaks count as "characters", but not as "characters without spaces".
What counts as a word?
A run of letters or digits. Words with a hyphen or apostrophe (don't, well-known) count as one word.
