What it accepts
Groups of eight bits (bytes), separated by spaces, commas, new lines or nothing at all. A long unbroken string of 0s and 1s is cut into bytes of eight. The bytes are read as UTF-8, so 11000011 10101001 becomes é. If the bytes aren't valid UTF-8, they are read as Latin-1, one byte per character, and the tool tells you.
Mistakes are pinpointed
If something other than a 0 or 1 sneaks in, or a group isn't a multiple of eight bits, the tool shows the position of the problem, such as line 2, character 5, instead of returning garbage.
