Hours calculator

Put your working times underneath each other, one day per line, and see how much you worked in total. Optionally enter the break to deduct from every line, and your hourly rate to see what you earn. You see the total in hours and minutes and in decimal hours, plus a table with each line.

One working day per line, from start to end time. 8:30, 08.30 and 0830 all work. If a shift ends after midnight, the next day is counted.

Optional. Taken off every line.

Optional. Then you also see what you earn.

How it works

  1. Enter the values

Type the numbers or the formula. Decimals may use a point or a comma. No idea? Click Fill in an example.

  2. Instant answer

The answer appears as you type, with the most important intermediate values.

  3. See the working

Under "How it's worked out" you see the steps, handy for checking your own calculation.

How it works

For each line the tool subtracts the start time from the end time, and then the break. The lines are then added up.

An example of three days with a 30-minute break each day:

From To Break Worked
08:30 17:00 30 min 8:00
08:15 16:45 30 min 8:00
09:00 18:15 30 min 8:45

The total is 24:45, so 24.75 hours. At an hourly rate of 18.50 that is 457.88.

Common uses

  • Time tracking for a freelance invoice. Add up the hours of the week or month and use the total as the quantity in the invoice generator.
  • Timesheets. Check in a few seconds that the addition on a rota is right.
  • Shift work and on-call staff. With night shifts that end after midnight you do not need to correct anything.
  • Estimating pay. Multiply the decimal hours by your gross hourly rate. What is left after tax you can see with the take-home pay calculator.

Watch out when adding

Times are not decimal numbers. If you add 7:30 and 8:45 on an ordinary calculator as 7.30 + 8.45, you get 15.75, while the answer is 16:15. That is because an hour has 60 minutes. The tool takes care of this. To find the length between two dates in days, use days between dates. The times stay in your browser and are not sent anywhere.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert hours and minutes to decimal hours?

Divide the minutes by 60 and add them to the hours. 7 hours 45 minutes is 7 + 45 ÷ 60 = 7.75 hours. The other way round: 0.25 hours is 15 minutes. Multiply your pay rate by the decimal hours, not by 7.45: 7:45 does not mean 7.45 hours.

How does it work for a night shift?

If the end time is at or before the start time, the tool counts the next day. A shift from 22:00 to 06:00 is therefore 8 hours. To avoid that, split the shift over two lines around midnight.

How do I enter times?

One start and end time per line, for example 08:30 - 17:00. You can write 8:30, 08.30 or 0830. A day name in front, such as Mon, is fine. A date with a year is not, because 2026 looks like a time. If a line has more than two times, you get a message.

Should I take the break off the working time?

That depends on your contract and local rules. In the UK, workers over 18 are entitled to a 20-minute rest break if they work more than six hours, but whether it is paid varies. Enter the break if you want it taken off, leave it empty if you count it. The tool takes it off every line.
