TAR or TAR.GZ?
- TAR puts files in one archive without compressing them. The result is about as large as the originals.
- TAR.GZ is a TAR archive compressed with gzip, the standard for software and backups on Linux and macOS.

Good to know
A TAR file made here holds the files and folders, but not Unix permissions or owners, because a browser doesn't know them. For most uses, such as sharing or backing up files, that makes no difference.
