What is a ZIP file?

A ZIP file is an archive: a single file that holds several files and folders, usually compressed so the whole is smaller. That makes it easy to email, upload or store many files at once. ZIP is the most widely used archive format, and Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS can open it without extra software.

Zipping with this tool

Drop your files or folders in the box, or click to choose them. You see a list of everything that will go in, and you can remove single files. Name the archive, choose how strongly to compress it, and click Create archive. The ZIP is downloaded at once.

Folders stay folders

Drop a folder and its structure is kept inside the ZIP. Whoever unpacks it gets exactly the same folders and files back.

ZIP with a password

With a password, the files are encrypted with AES-256. Note that the built-in unzip of Windows can't open these; the receiver needs a program such as 7-Zip, WinRAR or, on a Mac, Keka. If everyone should be able to open the file without extra software, leave the password empty.

How much smaller will it be?

That depends on the files. Text, spreadsheets and many documents shrink a lot. Photos (JPG), videos and PDFs are usually compressed already and hardly get smaller; the benefit of a ZIP is then mostly that everything is in one file.

Is there a maximum size?

There is no fixed limit. Everything happens in your browser's memory; a few gigabytes can be too much for a phone.

Are my files uploaded?

No. The archive is made in your browser; your files don't leave your device.
