What is an EV?
Exposure is measured in stops, or EV. +1 EV doubles the amount of light, and −1 EV halves it. So +0.5 is a gentle lift and +2 makes the image four times as bright. The slider runs from −3 to +3 EV in steps of 0.1.
Exposure, brightness or gamma?
- Exposure multiplies every pixel, much like a camera's exposure setting: shadows lift quickly, and the brightest parts clip first.
- Brightness adds or subtracts the same amount everywhere, which can wash the image out.
- Gamma changes the midtones and leaves pure black and white alone.
For an underexposed photo, exposure usually gives the most natural result. If highlights start to clip to pure white, back off a little and lift the shadows with gamma instead.
Frequently asked questions
How much should I raise the exposure?
Start with +0.5 to +1 EV for a photo that is a little dark. Watch the brightest parts: once they turn pure white, that detail is gone for good, so lower the slider a little.
Will the quality suffer?
No. The download has the same resolution as your original, unless the tool changes the size itself. Save as PNG to keep every detail, or as JPG or WebP for a smaller file.
Is my image uploaded?
No. Everything happens in your browser. Your image never leaves your device and is not stored.
