Two kinds of noise

  • Film grain (grey) changes only the brightness of each pixel, like the grain in analogue film. It is the subtle, attractive kind.
  • Colour noise varies the colour as well, like a photo taken at a very high ISO.

The amount goes from 0 to 100%. Around 15–30% gives a light film look; more is a deliberate effect.

Why add noise?

Grain makes digital images look less clinical and warmer. It can also hide the visible bands that appear in smooth gradients such as skies, and it adds a touch of texture to flat illustrations. The grain is the same every time for a given image, so the download matches the preview. If it looks too coarse, shrinking the image afterwards makes it finer. To soften noise that is already in a photo, a light blur helps.

Frequently asked questions

What amount of noise looks natural?

For a film look, use 15–30% of grey grain. Colour noise is more noticeable, so keep it lower unless you want a rough, digital look.

Will the quality suffer?

No. The download has the same resolution as your original, unless the tool changes the size itself. Save as PNG to keep every detail, or as JPG or WebP for a smaller file.

Is my image uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser. Your image never leaves your device and is not stored.
