Step by step
The blur radius runs from 0 to 60 pixels. A few pixels softens a photo slightly; 20 or more makes fine detail unreadable. The blur is applied to the whole image, using a smooth Gaussian-style algorithm, so there are no blocky edges.
Uses
- A soft background image for a website or slide, where the text on top must stay readable.
- Hiding personal details such as a licence plate or a face. Use a large radius: a light blur can sometimes be reversed by software. If you must be sure, cover the area with a solid shape instead.
- Softening noise or skin texture a little.
The blur radius is measured in pixels of the original image, so the same setting looks lighter on a very large photo than on a small one. To do the opposite, use sharpen image.
Frequently asked questions
Is a blurred licence plate really unreadable?
A heavy blur is usually enough for everyday use, but a light blur can sometimes be partly reversed. When it matters, cover the detail with a solid block rather than blurring it.
Will the quality suffer?
No. The download has the same resolution as your original, unless the tool changes the size itself. Save as PNG to keep every detail, or as JPG or WebP for a smaller file.
Is my image uploaded?
No. Everything happens in your browser. Your image never leaves your device and is not stored.
