Step by step

  1. Drop your image into the box. The tool picks the background colour from the edge of the image.
  2. Not the right colour? Click on the background in the image to choose another one.
  3. Move the colour tolerance until your subject stands clear. A higher tolerance also removes colours that are further from the background colour.
  4. Use soft edge to make the change to transparent more gradual, so the outline doesn't look cut out.
  5. Download the result as PNG or WebP, both of which keep the transparency.

Around the subject, or everywhere?

By default only the background around your subject is removed. The same colour inside the subject, such as a white shirt on a white background, stays put. Choose Everywhere in the image if you want every matching pixel gone, holes included.

What works best

A plain, evenly lit background, such as a product photo on white, a logo on a solid colour or a scan on paper. A busy background, such as a street or a tree, can't be separated by colour alone. The tool doesn't recognise people or objects; it works purely on colour, which is why nothing is uploaded. A transparent background can't be saved as JPG, so that format isn't offered.

Frequently asked questions

What does the colour tolerance do?

The tool makes pixels transparent when they look like the background colour. With a higher tolerance, colours that differ more from it disappear too. Start around 60 and raise it until the last fringes of background are gone, but not so far that parts of your subject start to disappear.

Which file formats can I upload?

JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, TIFF and SVG. You download the result as PNG or WebP, so the transparency is kept.

Is my image uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser. Your image never leaves your device and is not stored.
